Research of Magazine Advert's
In the most magazine advertisement
the main image is presenting the artist and in come case the album cover. The pictures
are taken by use of close-up or just simply show some image which relates to
the album. The text is the largest and mostly uses the font which catches the
audience eyes. Also, the text includes album name and the artist/band name. In
the corners we can see the logos of the companies which promote and distribute
the albums (where we can get them). The colours usually match the text and the
image. The background is black to establish the text and make it more visible. In
some magazine advertisement the reviews and ratings are presented to make the album
more interesting for the audience. Also, in some cases the quoting’s are included.
Based on this knowledge
I will try to create a similar magazine advertisement for my album, which would
follow the conventions of existing products.
Record Label
These are examples of
the existing record labels; the convention for all of them is that they are in black
and white colours. Some labels incorporate the use of an image or stencil. In most
cases the name appears in the bottom part of the logo, also the All the designs
create a geometric shape making them easy to be placed in the corner or the centre
of a digipak.
After making sure
that there is no record label like this I decided to call my record label “X”, which
would indicate the X factor which is seen as a unique and special factor
especially in relation to the music.
I have created my own
record label by looking at the existing ones and taking them as an example what
is conventional for the record label to be and look like.
Track Name (DigiPak)
I decided that my
album would continue the powerful name of “Radioactive” song with the name of
the fake artist as I do not presenting the band. This is going against the
alternative rock conventions as mostly this music is played by the band but in
my case I decided to show one artist which could be seen as a character as he
is not signing in the video clip, and present him in the album cover. I choose
the actual name of my artist which is Kevin and added the surname which would
still in the memory of the audience Strong. The font style which I chosen is
simple and easy to read, as after analysing the variety of album covers from
this particular genre I liked the Fun album and its font style. I am using the
Verdena (regular) font style.
Conventions of the Album Covers
In most alternative rock album
covers the artists aren’t presented on the album covers but there are some
album covers where we can see the full band or particular artist. In most cases
the title (name of the band/artist) is the most important feature in the album
covers or CD’s. This might be because mostly the albums from alternative rock
are abstractive and doesn’t present the artist/band but just underline their
name and the name of the album to show that the music is the most important. The
title usually takes the attention of the audience from the image presented on
the album. The use of colours in both album and CD always match with each other
regarding the font style, size and any additional features as well. The colours
in these particular albums indicate the variety of different characters or
personalities which have been highlighted by use of different animals. They might
be a symbol of One Republic band as they all are different but they match
perfectly with each other through the music. The size of the band name is the
largest and stands out the most, this might be because there is no other
connotation with the band rather than they name. Also, the name of the album
plays important role as it’s just below the band name and as well stands out to
the audience.
The other album is
made by the band Fun, which as well play alternative rock music. Their album is
different to the others as it’s shown the band itself on a main cover. The main
and most stands out feature on the album cover is the name of the album and
just below it are presented the photo with its band. By this we can see that
the band doesn’t pay much attention on their appearance or importance of their
look in the album but mostly they focus on their name and the album name to be remembered
by the audience. I choose this album to analyse because is interesting in its
own way of being simple. Also, the CD follows the cover convention and stay as
simples as it is.
The last album cover
which I have analysed has been made by the band Thirty Second to Mark. From a
variety of album covers I have chosen this one as is different and catch my interest
the most from all of them. In the album cover we see sarcasm by quoting “a beautiful
life” which is an album title and directed on the two sculls which indicate
death. The dark theme is not unconventional for the alternative rock bands, however,
some of them choose to do brighter albums rather others wants to make it simple
and clear for the audience to read the message. The convention for the CD is to
follow the look of the cover i.e. font size, style and colours. Also, the back
cover mostly doesn’t present any image but focuses on the album tracks and any
additional logos to be presented. By analsysis those particular albums I have
learn on which features of my future album I should focus the most and how it
should look like to follows the alternative rock conventions.
